Design, Technology and Society Doctoral Program

Developing novel ideas with an impact on a wide range of fields is only possible with the advancement of design- and technology-based innovation skills and culture. This development requires the assessment of innovation process as a creative social practice in relation to its cultural, economic and political context. When this assessment is applied to Turkey, it becomes clear that with its cultural and social identity, Turkey has set itself apart from geographically, politically, and economically similar countries and has become a player in the world economy with its dynamic and growing market. These qualities highlight the increased potential of design and innovation practices and research in Turkey.

Design, Technology, and Society Doctoral Program is built upon this perspective. Design is evaluated as a creative social practice and a major player in contemporary material culture. As such, design is analyzed as an innovation trigger within its technological, social, political, and economical system. ÖzÜ’s world-standard innovation and entrepreneurship vision helps the program to be grounded on sound and innovative practices and a scholarship of teaching and learning based on social theories and research.

Design, Technology, and Society Doctoral Program differentiates itself from local and global design doctorates through these qualities and perspective. The program aims to educate practitioners, researchers and scholars who can evaluate the local and global ecosystems while using their design and innovation skills as social practices. The graduates will be equipped with the theoretical perspectives and critical thinking skills – including the social, cultural, financial, and political realism related with development of new products and services- for undertaking interdisciplinary research.

Researchers coming from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, especially from Architecture, Design, Engineering, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences reinforce the interdisciplinary dialogues and the knowledge exchange of the Design, Technology and Society Doctoral Program. This interdisciplinary profile also enables emergence of new interdisciplinary research opportunities and production of unique knowledge regimes.
